Research Methods
Chair: Gillian R. Currie (University of Calgary) Members: W. Avison, R. Brant, P. Janssen, D. Moher, R. Platt, A. Plint, L. Sung, W. Ungar.
The Research Methods Core’s goal is to establish a community of methodological experts working in maternal, infant, child and youth health to enhance the methodological capacity to support national collaborative clinical research. In the absence of a network, the ability to collaborate nation-wide has been limited and there are redundancies in efforts and impediments to collaborating across projects. The Research Methods Core will facilitate collaboration amongst methodologists to enhance efficiency and ensure excellence and to foster development of innovative research methodologies. This involves two objectives: 1) supporting linkage of methodologists to clinical research projects to facilitate knowledge transfer in the application of appropriate methods; and 2) supporting linkage of methodological researchers to each other to foster development and innovation in the methods themselves. These objectives will be achieved by a number of complementary activities including:
- development of a contact directory of Canadian researchers committed to maternal and pediatric research to facilitate communication and collaboration;
- establishment of working groups in different disciplinary areas with a mandate of identifying critical and unique methodological issues and challenges in maternal, infant, child and youth research;
- sponsored workshops focused on research methods that will target both clinical and methodological researchers with specific courses and topics presented for each audience;
- MICYRN sponsored methodological research grants; and
- linkages to other MICYRN cores.
